Myth #1: “Soft Game First, Power Later”


Every over 40 rec player loves to say this. “I’ll just drop and dink until I get better, then I’ll learn to drive and speed up.” Wrong. That’s how you build a game that stalls at 3.5 forever. The pros, even the best dinkers, know when to attack. The difference is they know how to pick the right ball and hit it with confidence. You should too. Stop hiding behind your soft game. Develop your power game in parallel. Your hands aren’t getting faster as you age, so train them now.


Myth #2: “Take It Easy, Play Safe”


I get it. You don’t want to pull a hamstring lunging for a wide dink. But let’s be honest, 90% of your “safe” shots are just lazy footwork and fear of mistakes. Playing “safe” is how you let better players take over the net while you stand there hoping they pop it up. If you’re over 40, you should be moving more, not less. Stay light on your feet, learn when to be aggressive, and trust your body can handle more than you think, if you train it. Playing “easy” is why you’re losing rallies you should own.


Myth #3: “New Paddle, New Game”


You see it every week. Some guy in his 50s shows up with the latest $250 paddle thinking he’s suddenly a 4.0. Newsflash, that carbon fiber won’t fix your bad habits. You want real results? Invest that money in a lesson, a drill partner, or a ball machine. Or even better: spend 30 minutes three times a week drilling your footwork and resets. The paddle is just a tool, it doesn’t swing itself.
