In pickleball doubles, mastering a few key shots can be the difference between dominating the court and missing out on victory. Here are the 5 must-have go-to shots that every doubles player should sharpen to control the game:
1. The Third Shot Drop
This is the bread and butter of doubles play. It allows you to neutralize your opponents' advantage after the serve, giving you and your partner the chance to move up to the net. Aim for a soft, controlled shot that lands in the kitchen, forcing your opponents into a defensive position.
2. The Dink Shot
When you're at the net, the dink shot is essential for maintaining control. It keeps the rally going and sets you up for an aggressive follow-up. A well-placed dink that forces your opponents to pop the ball up is the perfect setup for a smash.
3. The Lob
A strategic lob can surprise your opponents, especially if they are aggressively positioned at the net. Well-executed lobs buy you time to reset the rally and can push your opponents back, giving you the chance to take control.
4. The Forehand Drive
A strong forehand drive is a great weapon, particularly when the ball is just a little too high for a dink. A powerful drive can put your opponents on their back foot or force an error, giving you a quick point.
5. The Smash
When your opponents give you a high ball, capitalize on it with a decisive smash. A powerful smash is the best way to end a rally and assert dominance on the court. Placement is key—aim for your opponent’s feet or open spaces to seal the deal.
By mastering these 5 shots, you'll be well-equipped to dominate on the doubles court and take your game to the next level.
